To celebrate 10 years since the release of Shouting at a Silent Sky, I've opened up the archives so everyone can experience the journey that this record took from the acoustic guitar and piano demos, to the band demos - which I've labeled "'Mercies' Demos" - because they feature my brother and former Traveling Mercies bandmate Brandon Tutmarc on drums, while I did the other overdubs. All 11 songs from the eventual album are represented here in my favorite demos of each song. While most of the songs went through a number of different versions, the acoustic demos of "Eliot" and "Let Me Down Easy" are the only home recordings for those songs as they were last minute additions, just before we entered the studio to begin the actual sessions. I hope you enjoy getting a peek into the process, and that it enrichens your listening experience with Shouting at a Silent Sky. It's hard for me not to feel like a number of these versions feel a little more honest and direct than the final product, but that's the beauty of rediscovering old demos and remembering where the songs came from. This album holds a very special place in my heart, and it's been rewarding to see these songs have lives of their own over this last decade. It may be true that "you can't turn back time," but thankfully with music you kind of can. XO Shane
